What is CBD Oil?
CBD stands for ‘cannabidiol’ and is the second most prevalent and active ingredient derived from the Cannabis plant.
Just because it comes from the same plant doesn’t mean it will have the same effect on you as the drug, Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), does though.
CBD is one of the hundreds of components found in Cannabis, but it does not create a "high".
Therefore, the effects of cannabidiol are completely different. According to research done by the World Health Organization (WHO), "In humans, CBD shows no effects that suggest it may be misused or addicted... There have been no reports of public health problems connected to the use of pure CBD to yet."
The WHO report into Cannabidiol in 2017 also stated a list of conditions in which CBD could be an alternative or additional potential treatment. More on those later!
While CBD is a key component of medicinal cannabis it is not the same as marijuana-derived CBD products that also contain THC in various ratios, such as 2:1 or 1:1.
Instead, CBD is either taken directly from hemp, a low THC variant of Cannabis, or it can be synthesized in a lab.
However, in the UK the vast majority of cannabis-based health supplements are hemp-derived CBD products.
What Can CBD Oil Be Used For?
CBD is able to treat a variety of issues, though it should be said that it is not a cure-all, instead it can help alleviate the symptoms. With that in mind here are a few things that CBD oil can potentially help with:
- Various Forms of Epilepsy - In many peer-reviewed studies CBD oil was able to reduce the number of seizures a person had, and in some cases even stop them altogether, proving an especially effective treatment for children.
CBD oil also has far fewer side effects than regular epilepsy drugs can have, however, it is known to interact with other medications, therefore, professional medical advice must always be sought.
- Treatment for Anxiety Disorders - while not a cure for this, it can potentially reduce the symptoms of anxiety in some people.
- Chronic pain - some research has found that CBD oil can help people manage their chronic pain. For people with arthritis, that suffer from joint pain, CBD oil may work as an anti-inflammatory when applied directly onto the skin. It can also be ingested to have the same effect.
- Insomnia - Having a few drops of CBD oil before bed has been said to help people with insomnia to fall asleep and stay asleep throughout the night.
- Addiction - In certain cases CBD oil has helped people overcome their addictions to tobacco and hard drugs like opiates and heroin. While it will not cure the addiction, it can be used to lessen the cravings for the drugs and is a great natural alternative to use alongside other treatment methods.
How To Take CBD Oil?
There are many methods you can use to take CBD oil. Here are just a few:
With a dropper
To ingest the oil simply put a few drops under your tongue and hold it there for 30-60 seconds before swallowing. Under your tongue is a capillary-rich area (lots of small blood vessels in one place), so the oil will get into your bloodstream quicker.
How many drops you can take at a time, and how many times a day you can take it will depend on the oil you buy as it can come in a variety of different strengths, for example, our most popular broad-spectrum product is our cannabidiol oil 1000mg at 10% strength, we also have 5% all the way up to 17% in our CBD oil Spray range!
So be sure to read the directions before trying the oil for the first time!
With food and drink
Some Full-Spectrum CBD oils can have a very distinct and earthy taste. If you want to avoid tasting this then it is very easy to add the oil to your foods or drinks.
For drinks, smoothies work best as they have a lot of flavours that can counteract the earthiness of CBD. Simply put a few drops into the smoothie and mix and you shouldn’t be able to taste it at all.
This is how you will most likely buy your CBD oil. It usually comes in a small bottle with a dropper.
You could also use our Broad-Spectrum CBD Oil to add to food and drink as it has a very light and delicate flavour!
With foods CBD oil has been known to have more of an effect in foods with a lot of fatty acids. This is because these acids protect the CBD oil from getting destroyed by your body during digestion before the compound can be absorbed.
CBD oil works best in dishes with:
- Olive oil
- Coconut oil
- Sesame oil
- Soybean oil
You can easily find many simple CBD-containing recipes online if you want to give this method a go.
