CBD, or cannabidiol, derived from the cannabis plant, is linked to have several physical and mental health benefits. Whilst CBD has been approved for some pharmaceutical medicines it is also available to the public as a food supplement.

CBD cream, tablets, and gummies are just some of the ever-increasing range of products, however, CBD oil is still the most popular form.

There is no one size fits all dosage for CBD oil, but if you’re worried or confused over how much you should take, we are here to help. We’ll cover the answer in this article, as well as if it’s possible to take too much CBD oil.

How To Take CBD Oil?

CBD oil can be taken in several different ways. The most common method is taking it through a tincture or oil. This is a substance taken by placing drops under your tongue.

Take a look at our blog that covers how many drops are in CBD bottles of different sizes here.

Our oils are available in several different strengths, from 500mg CBD Oil all the way up to 3000mg CBD oil, depending on your needs.

Use the dropper to dispense the oil under your tongue. This area is full of capillaries that transport the CBD to your bloodstream quicker. Hold the oil under your tongue for at least 60 seconds before you swallow it.

CBD oils also come in capsule form, which may be easier for people to take on the go. However, as these tablets are passed through the digestive system, they can take up to half an hour to be absorbed.

At Beliebis, we created flavoured CBD oil sprays that, like capsules, are quick and hassle-free to use. They’re also available in berry and citrus flavours in case you don’t like the natural taste!

Other ways of taking cannabidiol include mixing it in drinks, like coffee or smoothies. Some also bake the oil into sweet goods, like brownies or cookies. Some have also seen success when applying CBD oil balm topically to alleviate muscle pain.

How Much CBD Oil Should You Take?

The amount of CBD needed for each person varies, but on average this dose can be anywhere between 5 and 30mg, 2-3 times per day.

The amount of CBD in a drop of oil varies. Depending on the strength some oils can have 1,500mg in a 30ml bottle (approx. 5%), whereas some can have a higher concentration, over 3000mg in a 30ml bottle, which is approximately 10% strength CBD.

The UK Food Standards Agency (FSA) recommends no more than 70mg per day for an average healthy adult.

How To Calculate CBD Dosage

To work out how much CBD is in a drop of oil, look at the oil’s concentration. It should be written on the label, at least as a total amount, or broken down for you per serving.

A drop of oil varies though we have measured the amount produced by our droppers, which means a 10ml bottle should have approx. 300 drops with a 30ml bottle around 900 drops.

You can figure out the strength of your product from here.

For example, our 1500mg CBD oil UK has a concentration of 50mg/ml, with roughly 900 drops within it.

One drop is 1500mg ÷ 900 drops = approx.  1.6mg CBD per drop

CBD Dosages For Different Conditions

As stated previously, there’s no standard CBD dose as this varies on several factors. A person’s metabolism, weight, and height all come into play, as well as the type and form of CBD you’re taking.

We recommend starting with a low dose and experimenting to see how CBD oil affects you.

Nevertheless, there are some different recommended dosages depending on the ailment you wish to treat. After you know how strong your CBD oil is, you can research how much you should take depending on your condition.

Anxiety

In some studies, the research found that participants improved their anxiety levels after being given CBD doses from 300mg to 600mg. However, this is quite a large dose, especially if you have never tried CBD before and is over the UK FSA's recommended maximum daily dose of 70mg.

If you want to try CBD oil to help your anxiety, stick with a low dosage. Staying below 70mg a day should keep you safe, but if you’re just starting, work up to this number slowly.

Poor Sleep

A good night’s sleep is important for both physical and mental health. In modern society, work, stress, and poor health can cause inadequate sleep. Research studies that looked into CBD’s effect on sleep patterns used a low dose of 25mg a day.

In most cases, 25mg a day roughly translates into 10 drops of oil, though this can differ depending on the size and concentration of your bottle. Our 1000mg CBD Oil contains 16.5mg per 5 drop serving.

Take your CBD oil half an hour before you go to bed. If 25mg doesn’t help you after a few days, you can increase your dosage by a few drops each week. To be on the safe side, don’t go over 70 mg a day.

Migraines

Some individuals have had success taking CBD for migraines, but this is yet to be scientifically proven. More research is needed, but we do know that CBD has effects on brain receptors that manage inflammation.

Reducing inflammation in the brain is likely to help with pain caused by headaches.

There is no current recommended dosage for migraines, however, as always we would recommend starting low and slow, then work your way up to a dose you are happy with!

Depression

CBD oil isn’t a full cure for depression, but it could help sufferers deal with the symptoms. CBD acts on the brain’s receptors that produce serotonin.

Serotonin is a chemical that can reduce stress levels, make you feel happier overall and is the target of prescription anti-depressants that are in-famous or their strong, negative side effects.

CBD also prevents anandamide from disintegrating. Anandamide is a neurotransmitter responsible for memory, sleep, and hunger levels.

People who suffer from depression can take between 40 to 70 mg each day. Start taking CBD twice a day, once when you wake up, then again in the evening.

Don’t go above 70mg a day, but start at the lower end and increase by 10mg every week until you reach a dosage you are satisfied with.

General Pain and Inflammation

Many people who suffer from pain have seen improvements when taking CBD. This includes back problems, sports injuries, and cramps. It’s important to note that CBD cannot cure the cause of your pain, but it can help to manage the symptoms.

However, unlike some of the conditions above, there's no recommended CBD dose to alleviate pain. Everyone has different genetics which affects their pain tolerance. This means that you have to experiment with different dosages until you see a difference.

As with the other recommendations, it’s important to start slowly. If you’re a complete beginner, try taking 10 to 20 mg a day for at least a week. Note down any side effects or relief that you feel. If this dosage doesn’t help, increase by 5 mg each week until you see a difference, but try not to exceed 70mg a day.

Can You Take Too Much?

Though it is technically possible, it’s very difficult to overdose on CBD oil. The human tolerance for CBD is very high. A study showed that CBD started to become harmful after 20,000 mg was taken, which would be the amount consumed if you drank forty bottles of our cannabidiol oil 500mg in one go!

The World Health Organization has also carried out several studies into cannabidiol, they have stated CBD is non-toxic, non-addictive and as having a long list of therapeutic potential. You can read the report here.

Studies have experimented with various amounts of CBD, ranging from as little as 20 mg to as high as 1500 mg each day. While the high end of this range isn’t likely to be toxic, it’s important to note that these large dosages were administered in a clinical environment. Unless instructed by your doctor, don’t exceed 70 mg a day.
